up on the rooftop

The chimney guys came to install our spankin' new stainless steel chimney caps yesterday. If I do say so myself, they are the handsomest chimney caps in our neighborhood. See for yourself, before and after.

Fireplaces are common here in coldwetville, and ours is in decent shape for a 50-year old house. It has a solid clay liner, and some mysterious venting situation in which the vent of the old heating system (which runs parallel to the fireplace and out the chimney) can still be opened and used as a billows, or at least a draft, for the fireplace. (If you're reading this and thinking HEAT LOSS, you are absolutely right.)

We decided to get chimney caps not because of the rain, but rather because of the squirrels who live in the elm tree next to the house. They drink from the gutters. There was really nothing stopping them from climbing into the nice warm chimney, then entering our attic from the rickety metal panel that opens into the attic on the chimney. We were also afraid that Trevor Chang, our resident (former resident) raccoon, who also was inhabiting the tree, would find the attic even more amenable than the crawl space for his needs.
